Does God Still Speak?

In the stories of the Bible, God speaks to people in dramatic ways—through a burning bush, in a thundering voice from a mountain, or through angelic messengers. It's easy to read those stories and wonder, "Does God still speak to people like that today? And if He does, why can't I hear Him?" In our noisy, fast-paced world, filled with endless distractions from our phones, work, and entertainment, hearing the voice of God can feel like trying to hear a whisper in the middle of a rock concert.

The good news is that God is not silent. He is a communicating God who desires a personal relationship with us, and He is always speaking. The problem is usually not with His sending, but with our receiving. We often haven't learned how to tune our spiritual ears to His frequency. His voice is often a "gentle whisper" (1 Kings 19:12). Learning to hear Him requires intentionality, humility, and practice. Let's explore the four primary ways God speaks to us today.

1. Through His Word (The Bible)

This is the clearest, most reliable, and most important way God speaks to us. The Bible is not just a collection of ancient stories; it is described as "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12). It is God's direct revelation of His character, His will, and His plan for our lives. While God *can* speak in other ways, He will *never* contradict what He has already said in His Word. This makes the Bible the foundation and the filter for everything else we think we might be hearing from God.

How to listen through His Word:

  • Read Consistently: Make a habit of reading the Bible every day, even if it's just a few verses. You can't hear from someone you don't spend time with.
  • Read with an Open Heart: Before you read, pray a simple prayer like, "God, please speak to me through your Word today." Ask the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart to understand what you're reading.
  • Pay Attention to What Stands Out: Sometimes a particular verse or phrase will seem to jump off the page. It might be a promise that brings comfort, a command that brings conviction, or a truth that changes your perspective. When this happens, pause and reflect on it. Ask God why He is highlighting that for you.

2. Through His Spirit (The Inner Voice)

When you become a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. Jesus called him the "Advocate" and the "Spirit of truth" who will "guide you into all the truth" (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit often speaks to our hearts through a gentle nudge, a deep sense of peace or unease, a prompting to do something, or a thought that aligns with Scripture.

"Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it,' when you turn to the right or to the left." - Isaiah 30:21

How to listen through His Spirit:

  • Cultivate Quiet: It's nearly impossible to hear a whisper in a noisy room. Intentionally create moments of silence in your day. Turn off the music, the podcast, and the TV. Go for a walk in nature. Just be still and listen.
  • Test the Voice: The inner voice of the Holy Spirit will always be consistent with the written Word of God. The Spirit will never lead you to do something that goes against the Bible. He will also produce "fruit" like love, joy, peace, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), not fear, confusion, or pride.

3. Through Other People (Godly Counsel)

God often uses other believers to speak into our lives. He has placed us in a community—the church—for our own growth and protection. A wise word from a trusted pastor, a mature Christian friend, or a mentor can be a direct message from God to you.

The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking counsel: "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed" (Proverbs 15:22). When you are facing a big decision or struggling to hear from God, seek out wise, godly people in your life. Share your situation with them and ask for their perspective and prayers. Often, God will use their wisdom, guided by His Spirit, and grounded in His Word, to bring the clarity you are seeking. Be wary of making major life decisions in isolation.

4. Through Your Circumstances (Providence)

Sometimes God speaks through the events and situations He allows in our lives. This is called His providence. He can open and close doors of opportunity, arrange "chance" encounters, and use both blessings and trials to get our attention and guide us. The story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is a perfect example. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he eventually rose to power in Egypt and saved his family from a famine. Looking back, he told his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20).

How to listen through your circumstances:

  • Look for Patterns: Are certain themes or opportunities repeatedly showing up in your life?
  • Pray for Discernment: Ask God to show you what He is trying to teach you through your current situation, whether it's a time of blessing or a time of hardship.
  • Confirm with Other Sources: This is the most subjective way to hear from God, so it's crucial to confirm what you think your circumstances are saying with the other, clearer sources: the Bible, the Holy Spirit's peace, and godly counsel.

Conclusion: A Relationship of Listening

Hearing God's voice is not a mystical art reserved for a few spiritual giants. It is the normal experience for every child of God. It is a skill that grows over time as we practice the discipline of listening. It requires us to immerse ourselves in His Word, to cultivate a quiet heart that is attentive to His Spirit, to humbly seek wisdom from His people, and to prayerfully interpret His work in our lives.

Don't be discouraged if it feels difficult at first. Like learning any new language, it takes time and practice. Start today. Find a quiet moment, open your Bible, and pray, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." He is faithful, and He loves to speak to His children.
